School Information

This perennial holiday classic has been delighting audiences since 1892. First performed in the famed Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Nutcracker was based on an E. T. A. Hoffman tale, choreographed by Petipa and Ivanov, to the glorious music by Tchaikovsky. The heroine of the tale, Clara, receives a mysterious gift, the Nutcracker, given to her by her favorite Uncle Drosselmeier.

Throughout Clara's wild and vivid dreams she witnesses the war between the Mouse King and the Nutcracker, who has come to life. She travels through a swirling snow scene to arrive in the Land of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and enjoys the playful dances of confectionaries from around the world. Utica Dance is known for it's lively production and spectacular costumes.

Each year our Ballet Level 1-7 students are joined on stage by guest professional dancers.
All pre-professional students in level 2 and above must attend classes in both ballet and jazz/tap to participate in the performance.
